Independent toll processing · Richmond & Petersburg, Virginia
The process step that makes your material work.
Virginia Polymer Services runs solid state polymerization, crystallization, drying, extrusion, grinding, and blending on polyesters, nylons, and specialty polymers. You keep ownership of the material. We handle the step your plant can't.

01 — Industry position
VPS does not fit a neat category.
Not a resin producer, not a compounder, not a processor. VPS meets a specific need inside each of them. Select a segment to see what that looks like.
Resin producers
A major resin producer has customers whose requirements fall outside the existing product mix. Building a new line for a specialty grade rarely pays for itself.
VPS provides SSP, crystallization, drying, blending, and classification to produce specialty grades that meet those customer requirements, without the producer adding capacity.
02 — Capabilities
Five process groups, one plant floor.
Equipment is sized for pilot runs through full production, so a trial and the order that follows it run on the same systems.
01
Batch processing
Rotary vacuum dryers run a controlled temperature profile per batch, under vacuum or atmospheric conditions.
- Solid state polymerization
- Crystallization
- Vacuum drying
- Heat treating, air or inert
- Blending and homogenization
02
Extrusion
Single screw extruders repelletize pellets, regrind, and fines into uniform pellets.
- Melting and blending
- Melt filtration
- Devolatilization
- Stranding and dicing
- Pilot through high throughput
03
Grinding
Two grinding systems convert scrap into usable regrind for reuse by VPS or by the customer.
- Strands, clumps, miscut pellets
- Plastic parts, sprues, runners
- Oversized pellet clumps
- Repurposed post-consumer plastic
04
Classification
Screening and sorting to a target particle distribution, before or after thermal processing.
- Sizing and screening
- Fines removal
- Sorting and blending to spec
05
Material handling
Resin arrives and ships in bulk, boxes, sacks, or drums. Transfer systems are built to keep streams separate.
- Conveying systems and hoppers
- Dedicated lines per material
- Designed against cross-contamination
- Dust and particle control
03 — Locations
Two plants, forty minutes apart.
Richmond handles thermal and extrusion work. Petersburg is built around size reduction and repurposed plastic.

SIZE REDUCTION & REPURPOSED PLASTIC
Petersburg, Virginia
Dedicated grinding capacity for post-industrial and post-consumer streams, kept separate from the Richmond thermal lines.
On site
- Granulation
- Repurposed plastic grinding
- Regrind production
- Sorting
- Bulk handling
04 — Sustainability
Recycling work since the 2000s, expanded recently.
Most of what VPS does keeps material in use. Some of it is the only route back to prime quality that a given scrap stream has.
In production now
- SSP for RPET pellets meeting FDA requirements for bottle-to-bottle recycling
- SSP for RPET in high IV applications: strapping, high-strength filaments, EBM bottles
- SSP and crystallization extrusion for post-industrial recycling, raising reuse of PI scrap and cutting virgin resin
- Processing, sorting, and blending that brings scrap polyester and nylon back to near-prime
In development with partners
- Removing surface coating from coated films
- Drying and melt filtering PET fines with high water and aluminum content
- Recycling PET sheet regrind into raw material for new sheet via SSP, without repelletizing
- Converting compound scrap into ground, sorted, blended material for compounding
- Processing low viscosity polymers into a high surface-area blown fiber matrix
